This post could be of particular interest to those who plan to have camping, hiking, or foraging trips this summer and to those whose SHTF plans A or B include bugging out. I know we try extremely hard to keep track of our children when on such adventures. However, even the most watchful can find themselves madly searching the area for a child that managed to wander out of view no matter how well attended. Children are always curious, and if never harmed very brave as they assume the world is a kind place and therefore prone to having their attention drawn away from the group or parent and to wander to sate that curiosity. Teach your children the principles of S.T.O.P. to assist themselves in being found if they find themselves lost in the woods. A good reminder for adults as well.

S=Sit down or stay put! Give yourself a breather to calm down and collect your thoughts to help avoid panic. T=Think. Take stock of the situation.  How did you get there?   How long until dark?  What useful items do you have with you? How is the weather? O=Observe. Look around and listen carefully.  What is around you that could be of  use?  Do you see or hear any signs of other people?  Do you hear the sounds of traffic, a train, or a dog? Perhaps running water?  Is the sound constant or does it appear to be moving? P =Plan.  If it’s safer to stay where you are, start preparing right away.  Look around for a safe source of water.  Gather wood to start a fire if you have matches or a fire starter.  Look for natural shelter like a boulder, cave,  or a fallen tree.  Gather leaves, pine needles, and branches for additional warmth and protection from the elements. The fetal position is known to be the warmest, making use of your own body heat to help remain warmer.
