The death of a loved one is a SHTF event. It turns your world upside down and inside out emotionally, financially, and legally. For you it is TEOTWAWKI. Your life will never be the same. Sadly in the mist of your personal grief, there are things that must be done. Important things, that we don’t want to worry about never mind have to do while we can hardly think straight.

No one likes to think about it or talk about it. We often don’t even think about our own deaths from a legal point of view until we either have a family that we are responsible for or an estate complicated enough that it will have to be dealt with professionally after our passing. But we must face the fact that living is a deadly adventure and none of us are going to get out of it alive! So we make a will and hope that it isn’t needed for a very long time. If you don’t yet have a will and have a straight forward estate you can make your own at this link or another like it. Until such time as you are able to have one done professionally by the attorney of your choice

Doing so will make a very difficult time for your loved ones a bit easier. That is as far into this subject as most of us think of in advance. (Other than checking the box to be an organ donor on our driver’s licenses) The truth is that most of us don’t think about the things that must be done when someone we love passes away. I thought I had it all taken care of for my own family by having not just a will but a prepaid burial/cremation plan. Until I had a near fatal heart attack and found that there is a lot more responsibilities for the family to worry about than the will and burial. I found this checklist I think  will make it easier for them when the time comes that they need it or if I find myself handling these duties for someone I love. I hope that none of you need it any time soon either, but if you do that it will make a very sad scenario a bit easier.
