Wikipedia describes the Amish community as follows

The Amish are a group of traditionalist Christian church fellowships with Swiss Anabaptist origins. They are closely related to, but distinct from, Mennonite churches. The Amish are known for simple living, plain dress, and reluctance to adopt many conveniences of modern technology. The history of the Amish church began with a schism in Switzerland within a group of Swiss and Alsatian Anabaptists in 1693 led by Jakob Ammann. Those who followed Ammann became known as Amish.

The Amish are still a very much thriving community within American society. Things are still done simply and without the majority of technology. Their way of life allows them to for the most part avoid modern day issues and problems. Even they however have found themselves dragging into SHTF events such as the Lancaster school shooting that occurred in 2006. You can see the basic story linked here if you are unfamiliar with this tragedy. >> School Shooting in an Amish One-Room School

Many people in the western world can’t make it comfortably through a 72 hour power outage, never mind a major long term SHTF event. The Amish might not even realize there has been a disaster out of their area or a manmade disaster of any kind until they hear about it  through word of mouth from their English neighbors.

We can learn a lot from their off-grid methods and ability to stay out of the fray when the SHTF. Self Sustained Living shares with us 6 off grid lessons we can learn from the Amish linked below
