It wasn’t too long ago that every home had a root cellar. Before supermarkets and electronic cooling, a root cellar was how people stored their garden goods for the year to come. They had the dual purpose in some areas to serve as a storm shelter as well. Many of the self-sufficient are returning to this old method of self-preservation in the event of a storm, a bad harvest year and prepping for a long term SHTF event. No electricity is required as nature keeps the temperature warm enough to prevent freezing in the winter months and cool enough to delay the decaying process in the warmer months and climates.

See Robert’s plans and his pictorial diary of creating his own root cellar at the link below. Before beginning any project like this make sure you have any necessary permits that could be required in your location and that your plan has been safety approved.
