Getting Started: Survival Basics

We all have to start somewhere, even our troops. But there are so many considerations. So where to start and how? What is most important and what do I have to buy? What can I make on my own, which knowledge is the first I should obtain? Lack of what skill will get me killed fastest? Sometimes it seems totally overwhelming. I can’t count the number of people who have come to me and said, I have been reading this survival stuff and I don’t think I can do it. When the SHTF I am going to die aren’t I?

Like most life questions these are all questions that no one but you and your higher power can answer. You have to decide that you will survive the initial event, Decide what is the most likely event to occur in your opinion for your area whether it be a natural disaster or a manmade crisis.

Then look at how it might happen, what about this event frightens you for your safety? That answer is where you will start! Read all the information that you can find on that event. Ask questions of those who have survived or seem to have information on the subject. Take what makes sense to you and act on it. Remember the other pieces of information you find as it may make sense later or give you and idea that could save you later.

Then go forward assuming you did of course survive the initial event and now you are left with your world turned inside out and decide what needs to be done first for you and your family to survive. Everyone’s opinion on what that is varies. My personal belief is that very first step to survival is being able to treat any injuries caused by the event. If you bleed to death, where to get water is irrelevant! So having a plan that assumes you survived is the very 1st thing you have to do to have hope of making it. You can start your plan using the rule of 3s

rule of 3

~The rule says in this case wilderness survival but it applies to all survival situations. Breathable air is #1, shelter #2 etc… This is where you start your plan based on the most likely disaster. Then build from there! Featured below are 2 articles with other opinions on how to start and where. Give them a read and remember to take with you what you can use and leave the rest behind. No one else’s plan is going to be 100% workable for you as no two people or situations are exactly alike. But their ideas can give you a starting point.
