I am truly amazed all the time with new technology. It is mind boggling the advances that science has developed over the last century. I remember a time before microwaves and when family members were the dishwasher! But sometimes I want to just scream whoa just slow it down for a minute here! These auto apps are a couple of examples of when I feel this way.

The 1st debuted in 2014 when the General Motors’ Chinese research and development department announced its idea of a smartphone app – dubbed DiDi Plate – enabling drivers to text others, by simply scanning their license number plate with their camera.  Still not in use by the public the technology is now employed by law enforcement, who can scan your license plate and their computer then pulls up all your information on file with the department of motor vehicles and wants and warrants. However, the idea of use by the general public… Well all I can say is WOW! I see more problems with this app than I can count! See the info at the link below and see what you think.

GM app lets you scan the number plate and text the driver

Another I find disturbing is the prospect of an autonomous vehicle that completely drives itself. The benefits are touted to be fewer traffic jams as a result of evenly maintained speeds and fewer fender benders due to automatic breaking and standard distance between vehicles. Again I must say.. are we really ready to let a computer driven machine to determine our safety? There is even a program that can be chosen that will determine in advance in a situation whether the car should protect the driver and passengers or pedestrians! The Transport Research Labs of London propose this driverless vehicle will extend the independence of the elderly, prevent impaired drivers and make for stress-less travel, Read about this innovation going into beta testing very soon at this link

London is set for driverless car roll-out – so what comes next?

We are already beginning to question the use of “guardian angel” technology that parks our vehicle or like the Tesla currently being sold offers a hands free navigation system that allows you to let the car determine who should drive at the moment… you or it! The recent death of one of its biggest supporters in an automobile accident where both the program and the driver failed to recognize and avoid the danger. See that story  here

I am a believer in onward and upward development of technology even though I can’t keep up these days. I qualify that belief with the parameters of what is best for not only the public, the individual, but the planet in general. Many times this means squashing the technology or limiting its use. Often the old ways like the old days may be harder but they were the good ole days! What do you think of these new technology advances in relation to your daily life and or commute?
