When I think banana I think tropics! I was surprised to learn that you can indeed grow these awesome survival plants at home. They do thrive best in warm humid locations. But can be grown at home with appropriate care or do nicely in a greenhouse. Not terribly easy to grow, so why would you bother? First because if you are successful they are tasty, but also because they are a tried and true survival food. Usually associated with sweet desserts in most western countries they are often eaten as a savory item. I have eaten them cooked the Samoan way boiled while still green and found they reminded me of a potato or a taro root.
