Opinions vary greatly on whether owning a gun is a deterrent or an incentive to criminals. Almost as greatly as the laws vary in each country. Each state, province and territory within the country’s laws vary as well.

These opinions and laws do effect preppers across the world.  We share concerns about our ability to legally hunt and protect ourselves before, during, and after a SHTF event. In some countries gun ownership is not a right or option for civilians by law. In the United States the law can literally change from one town to the next if traveling crosses any legal boundaries. The 2nd amendment is alwaays a hot topic for preppers and many other civilians whether they own a weapon or not.

There are those that believe that civilian gun ownership reduces the amount of crime in their communities as evidenced by this statement by the Police Chief of Detroit, Michigan. However if you read the article it speaks to a particular crime spree where a young woman approached the home asking for assistance. Once the door was opened the accomplices appeared and assaulted the home owner. Read Chief Craig’s statements regarding this at the link below

However, there was another case in the news around the same time period, where a homeowner shot a teenage girl knocking on his door at night.. He said he was afraid he was going to be the victim of a home invasion. He was convicted of 2nd degree murder. This case also happened in Detroit, Michigan. See that story at this link

One argument against the 2nd amendment is that more gun owners are killed by their own guns than by armed criminals. See the opinion of Joe Biden  quoting an 2012 Face the Nation interview.

Biden says most shootings happen with victim’s own gun

And the opposite opinion stated ambiguously by Cecil Adams in reply to a reader question on The Straight Dope in 2008.

We know how many people are killed by guns. How many are saved?

So what do the statistics say?

There are those as discussed above who by law are not allowed to own a gun and have found alternative methods of self defense. And there are others that feel prepping without firearms is just foolish and recommend specific weapons for the prepper
