The months of October and November are prime planting season for garlic. Although they can be planted in the spring as well. Not everyone knows that you can grow pretty much unlimited garlic from just a one bulb!

It’s a very easy crop to grow and requires very little care. As long as they are not over watered or planted in a soggy area of the garden they grow well just about anywhere. They also don’t take up much space in  the garden plot. To get started using a single bulb you need the starter bulb which can be obtained from a garden store or nursery, gifted from a friend’s garden or even purchased at your local grocery market. Pull the bulb apart clove by clove. Choose your spot in the garden and create small holes just large enough for each clove. The holes should only be a little deeper than the length of each clove and about 2 inches apart. Drop the cloves into the holes with the pointed end up. Then cover the cloves with just enough soil that the tip of the clove is only slightly under the surface. Once planted and sprouted the new bulbs can in some cases depending upon your weather conditions be left to harvest the following year but in the majority of the world they are an annual crop.

After harvesting your garlic, put aside a bulb or two for next year’s planting. Shake and brush any remaining soil off the bulb and loosely wrap in newspaper. If you have the space simply laying the bulbs out on the news paper or on opened brown paper bags is even better. Store for 3-4 weeks in a dry, climate controlled room out of direct sunlight and allow it to dry. When the bulb feels dry, check it for any soft spots. If soft spots are found the bulb has been damaged and may be better used for cooking rather than for planting. Once you have the desired number of dried undamaged bulbs cut the foliage off the top leaving just enough to insure you don’t cut into the bulb itself. Then place the prepared bulbs in a mesh bag, a pair of old panty hose or even a paper bag with holes punched through out. Hang the bag in a cool dark place until ready to plant.

Such an easy crop to grow and so valuable! Garlic is a wonderful source of vitamin B6. Vitamin C. manganese, and selenium. It’s been used for hundreds of years for medicinal purposes as well.
