To past generations the fields, barns, gardens, and the woods were the food producers. Your own pantry or root cellar was the grocery store. How you stored what you gained from your production made the difference between your grocery store shelves being empty or unusable and being able to walk in and find what you wanted, when you needed it and in good condition safe to eat.

With the development of major supermarket chains and 24 hour grocers this generation didn’t experience the need for storing food nor learn how to do it safely. After every major and even minor natural disaster, one of the first images shown the public is the empty grocery shelves. Rather than taking away the lesson of being the first on the scene at the market, we should be studying the lessons taught by previous generations and creating our own safe usable food source where the shelves will not be empty in the time of need.
