A generation or two ago people died from simple small wounds that became infected. Many more died from STD’s that went untreated until the advent of penicillin. Now these deaths are quite rare and the infections have to be much worse to cause death.

In any major SHTF event the basic necessary medications become scarce. I can personally attest to that from the tragedy of 9-11 which occurred on the east coast of the USA. Here on the west coast I suffered a rather severe animal bite and the appropriate quite simple drugs were unavailable. All the stock on hand had been shipped to New York and Virginia for treatment of survivors and first responders. I was fortunate that our generous Canadian neighbors were willing to share some of their stock with us and I was successfully treated.

This will not be an isolated situation should a disaster happen anywhere within the borders of your own country and would assume it would be even a larger shortage should it be a world wide issue. Particularly a manmade disaster that shuts down pharmaceutical manufacturers. If appropriate drugs and doctors are no longer available to the majority of people, many will once again suffer the sometimes life threatening consequences of a simple infection from a major or minor wound or injury.

So what to do if there is a long term world wide disaster? Make it yourself of course. I absolutely do not recommend you use this recipe for homemade penicillin unless appropriate medical care and the manufactured generic antibiotic version of the drug is not going to become available for the foreseeable future. Never replace your doctor’s advice with a home remedy. An allergic reaction to this drug in particular can be life threatening and would be further aggravated by the lowered quality of the penicillin. So even in a survival scenario use with extreme caution!

The instructions and materials needed are contained within the linked featured blog from Survivopedia. I also went in search of those materials and found all but the 750 ml Erlenmeyer flask with a non-absorbent plug available at Walmart! You can see them below the blog link. Personally I would replace the Erienmeyer flask with non-absorbent plug with an empty sparkling cider bottle which is glass and has a non-absorbent plug made from plastic.
