Seattle Food Forest by Atlas

World hunger has become a phrase heard so often it has lost its impact. We hear it, we know it, we even see the results of it on TV along side extremely sad pictures of hungry children. However too often we expect someone else some place else to take care of it. Were you aware that there is a new term for it? “Food insecurity” Which basically means these people go to bed each night unsure if they or their children will eat tomorrow.

Some cities and communities are doing something about it. Plots of land within the city usually reserved as public parks are becoming a new kind of park. More than just a pretty place with play ground equipment, tidy pathways and off leash dog areas. They are planning, planting and maintaining what has become known as a food forest.

Entire parks devoted to growing and producing fruits and vegetables where anyone and everyone is free to pick and forage. A true coming together of citizens to make their corner of the world a hunger free zone.

I am sure there are some issues with waste and greed but when the time comes when there is enough for everyone, this will cease to be an issue. In times of crisis and after or during a SHTF event  knowing where these meccas are and having access to them could really assist groups and families in surviving until either help arrives or they as individuals and small communities become self sufficient themselves.

Perhaps if enough of us ban together via our votes we can begin a prepping movement within our communities to insure that none of our neighbors go hungry today or in a wide spread crisis. To learn more about these public spaces and see if there is one near you click the link below
