Stockpiling some food products is only smart for a long- or short-term crisis scenario. Many people disagree saying that for the long term a stockpile will do you no good. It will eventually run out and then where will you be?

I both agree and disagree with that statement and thought process. I do believe living a self-sufficient lifestyle will serve you better in the long run if there is a crisis whether that be one lasting long term or only a few weeks. But I do feel that having a stockpile is an important part of preparing. Depending on the type of disaster you’re facing, the land around you could be under water or your garden trampled over or burnt beyond use. Your garden won’t do you any good if the disaster happens in the middle of the snow season if you haven’t preserved a portion of last year’s harvest.

Your stockpile will indeed run out if you don’t add to it and rotate its use. The stockpile will give you time to get self-sufficient again. For those that don’t have a rotation plan for stockpiling and self-sufficiency perhaps the featured article will give you a heads up on what to expect once the stored goods are gone and if you do have a rotation plan it will help you make wise choices on what and why.
