Cast iron is the preferred cookware of preppers, homesteaders, and campers. Granted it is too heavy to be carried in a bug out bag but it is so versatile in all other scenarios that if you are bugging in or in a situation where weight is not an deterrent then cast iron is the obvious choice.

It maintains a consistent heat whether used over electric, gas or even a camp fire. Because of its weight and durability it can be used in the oven or actually inserted into a fire and still hold up with out damage. However, it does require a fair amount of care to stay usable as the iron can rust quite easily and when washed in the traditional manner will require re-seasoning.

Many neglected pieces can be found inexpensively in thrift stores or at garage sales simply because the previous owners did not know how to recondition them. Their loss can be your gain if you know how to restore the pieces to their former glory!
