The sunflower is one of many plants that are now known to aid in phytoremediation, Phytoremediation is a natural process where plants literally clean the air, water, and soil around them. When you compare the process of planting sunflowers vs soil excavation and pumping away polluted ground water it is an extremely frugal and green way of undoing some of the damage done by humans and allowing the earth to replenish itself and become useable again. A few sunflowers in your garden area could clean up any toxins left behind from it’s previous use and many of the unhealthy elements  that may find their way to your plot from the environment around you.
