 Trash Talking

One thing often overlooking when talking about and thinking about OPSEC is today’s trash. In normal times unless we are trying to live green and recycle etc… or the garbage men and women are on strike we don’t tend to consider our rubbish as a big deal. But when faced with it logically I am overwhelmed with the amount of information about myself and my family that I place out on the corner every week!

I break down all boxes for recycling and they go inside the recycle bin so I never worried about who could or would see them and what it could tell them! I re-use my #10 bulked dried goods cans, so I do remove the label and there aren’t a large number that actually end up in the trash bin. I simply use the contents, remove the old label, run them through the dishwasher, re-fill them with my own home-made dried food storage, label them accordingly, and put them back on my pantry shelf. But the original label went directly into the trash! Without any thought of who might eventually end up seeing it, and my first thought would have been and who cares what we eat! It isn’t what we eat that might pique someone’s interest but the size of the label indicating a large quantity and that the item was intended for long term storage. (We do follow the store what you eat and eat what you store rotation so we can end up with empty cans to refill!)

This got me thinking about what else might someone learn from my trash! In the video featured below Southernprepper1 talks about what his friend who is a trash collector has learned about the customers on his route via their garbage. He also quotes what he heard said by a non-prepping “prepper”.

He’s ex-military. He said his plan is to hit preppers. He doesn’t have enough money right now to prep himself, so he’s going to go around and hit preppers.

So be careful.

I admit I had never concerned myself with being a specific target by intention. I do worry as we all do that in a post SHTF world that those that didn’t prepare will be desperate and could become violent and feel entitled to take from me that which I did save for, pay for, do without for to be prepared…. frankly typical looters. But it never occurred to me that there would be of course those that do know there is a need to prep and simply either can’t afford to at this time in their lives or have made a conscious decision not to prep with their preparation plan A to be to take from those that did. I wrongly assumed that they didn’t recognize the need for prepping and would find themselves desperate rather than looting BEING their prepping plan!
