I hate this topic! I hate it because the bad guy the active shooters win. He or she doesn’t go uncaptured most of the time and in most cases loses his/her own life during the event. Often times at their own hand. But they still won. Innocent people are injured or dead. Their victimization doesn’t end there either. The circle of pain widens. Like a rock thrown into a pond, the circles widen until they fade away. Only these circles don’t fade away for all those harmed.

Those in the line of fire are the 1st circle victims. Then there are the second ripple victims the families and loved ones of the first circle  of victims. Their wounds won’t ever heal. Knowing the shooter is dead or in custody does not make them whole again. Nothing ever will.

The third circle are those that were in the line of fire and escaped physically unharmed. Their wounds are emotional in the form of survivor’s guilt, PTSD, night terrors and feelings of inadequacy because they were unable to save others or stop the event.

Then people who saw or heard about the shooting who stop going to events, they change their lives to insure they aren’t the next victims. This makes them the next ripple victims because they felt it necessary to change their plans, or way of life due to the shooter’s actions.

Even those that refuse to be victimized are. They realize this when they finally release the breath they were holding while their children attended a concert and then came in through the door unharmed. When the first thing they see at an event is the exits. etc..

The bad guy won. He changed literally thousands and thousands of lives in a matter of minutes. Many involved in the final ripples don’t see themselves as victims of the shooter. But recognize it or not they are. They are missing out on things that make memories and when our time on earth is finished what is left of us is the memories we leave.

So why does the bad guy win? Is there a way to prevent the circles from rippling? See Doom and Blooms opinion at our featured link below
