Bugging out may not be your first choice. If you are not accustom to wandering about in or even temporarily living in the wilderness it may not be a planned option at all. Unless you have practice at doing so it is not a recommended choice either. It sounds like a reasonable scenario until such time as you actually find yourself in it! Those of us who are vacationing campers with our comfortable  gear may be in the most danger of all when it comes to bugging out into the wild. We (I include myself in this category) know just enough to be a danger to ourselves.

I personally am one who believes if the disaster isn’t one that you can’t out run then hunkering down is the first option, I do love to camp and have enjoyed a number of short term trips into the forest for pleasure. I do not feel I personally have the training nor individual ability to head out into the woods with my bug out bag and emerging on the other side of the disaster unscathed. However, there are SHTF scenarios where bugging out into unpopulated areas may be our only survival option.

Avoiding some common mistakes if this becomes your plan A for any reason is imperative. See the featured article below for information on avoiding those types of critical errors.
