I am asked all the time: “I am barely getting by for today. How am I suppose to prep for the future? Particularly for a disaster that may or may not come tomorrow or next year?”  There are lots of ways of prepping without spending a fortune and some can be done for free!

Things you can do without spending a dime include:

  • Planning – Getting together an action plan for different scenarios like, fire, earthquake or storms. Where should your family go? How should they get there? Keep in contact? Who is responsible for what? and so on.
  •  Recruiting – Most know that a group can accomplish more than can the lone individual. This can be as simple as like minded friends or getting your family and neighbors on board. If nothing else it may encourage others to think about the issues and prep themselves making it one less person knocking at your door during a time of chaos.
  •  Physical fitness – This can be as easy as an evening walk to build stamina or as rigorous as climbing a mountain. Whatever you can do to improve and equip yourself to be able to physically with stand the physical challenges of what you might face in a disaster.
  •  Skill building – Practice makes perfect and helps build muscle memory which can be all that stands between you and pandemonium.

Preps that can be achieved inexpensively:

  •  Hunting and fishing- If you already have the equipment or even if you don’t and want to practice your bush craft skills, you can do so by purchasing just a license or tag.
  •  Trapping – Making and using your own traps can be quite inexpensive as long as you obtain the proper documents to do so.
  •  Stockpiling food – Shopping the sales will save you a bundle both for today and if there is a disaster that closes your supply lines.
  • Canning and drying your own produce and food – costs much less and tastes better than store bought.
  •  Obtaining second hand or low cost preps – shop garage sales, estate sales, and even looking at the lower cost items first like emergency blankets.
  • Doing it yourself – Using items you already have on hand to make the equipment or gear that you need.
  •  Gain Knowledge – Read, ask questions, and test.
  •  Learn to forage – Get a good book or app to help you learn what plants in your area are edible and/or usable for medical purposes then head out into the woods and find them.
  •  Storing Water – Inexpensive if you reuse clean sealable containers. Build your own water filter. Harvest rainwater even in a clean trash can with a screen atop.

More expensive preps:

  •  Save – Even small amounts like tossing your change into a jar every week can add up and help cover these costs
  •  Compare – Check out and compare the costs, quality, and value of each larger item prior to purchase. Even a few dollars on each purchase adds up.
  •  Evaluate – Is this the best item for it’s purpose for you? Does it have a dual purpose? Will it assist you in the most likely scenario you will face? Can you maintain it?
  •  Security – Needed in both today’s world and a post SHTF world. Protecting those you value the most can be as simple or elaborate as you choose. But well worth every dime.

If you do a little each week before  you know it you will be well versed and prepared for what ever may befall you and yours!
