Should You Worry About Marauders?

Most of us heard about Tyler Smith and his group of marauders who call themselves Spartan Survival a few years ago when the National Geographic Channel was running its series ‘Doomsday Survival’. Personally I was not a fan of the show. They of course were looking for entertainment value and therefor showed only the extreme. Most of us aren’t extreme. I felt the show too often made preppers appear to be the segment of society of obsessed with conspiracy theories.

Like the show or not they did expose some of the dark side of what could loosely be called prepping. Meaning those whose idea of preparing is to prepare themselves not for defense but offense against their own communities. In other words marauders. The group featured in that episode was called Spartan Survival a group of approximately 80 due paying folks whose intent was to survive by taking supplies from others by force. Doomsday Preppers shows the dark side of Survival
The particular prepper spot lighted in that episode was Tyler Smith from the state of Washington. Mr. Smith found himself quickly slammed as one of the communities least liked “preppers” ever by the majority of prepping groups and individual preppers. As well as his neighbors and the local police. After the show aired he also found himself in serious legal trouble. It came out that Tyler Smith was not only a convicted felon and legally banned from processing or using firearms, but a level one sex offender who had failed to register his current address with the local authorities. Doomsday Preppers’ felon pleads not guilty to gun charge
I live in the pacific northwest so of course being aware of a group like this in our area is a priority. I truly am unsure if this particular man is still a threat to local communities or not. But there was never any report that stated that the group itself dismantled after his incarceration so I very much still see them and their methods not only distasteful but as a danger to other groups. Nor is there any report that I could locate that states whether he himself is still incarcerated. However, at this point in time I am sure he is out of custody and apparently laying low as we here locally haven’t a peep out of or about him since the time of his arrest.
You can bet if there is one group like this, that there are others. If there weren’t before the broadcast of that episode there surely are now! Are they a reasonable threat to you, your family or group? Are they a threat that we should be preparing for? Below is linked the featured blog of William Simpson with his opinion on that question.
