The featured article in this post was written by Jeff Tietz for Rolling Stone Magazine. I wanted to let you all know about the safe parking program in some states for those that are living in their vehicles. Something that is happening to more and more normally stable hardworking middle class people. By the grace of God go most of us! That is what I got from this article…. that it could happen to any of us. The folks featured in the article aren’t the “type” you would ever imagine becoming homeless. A single dad, who is a veteran and had a good job restoring boats, a single woman who owned a plant nursery, and a two income family who worked as an installer and a pharmacist respectively.

The gist of the writing is more about these people’s daily struggle to survive both physically and emotionally after being caught in the recessions clutches and the decline of the middle class in this and other western countries.  The safe parking program is one that assists those trapped in the cycle find and keep a spot to park to sleep without being hassled by police, other homeless persons with issues, or the local neighborhood residents who are afraid of “that” element in their neighborhood.  As a parent I was glad to hear such a program existed, but as a human being I found the article to be heart breaking. Definitely why I am and you could become a poverty prepper after reading!

As it details the struggles of these people, it does also give good advice about emotionally surviving the ordeal such as parking away from the rest of the herd so that it’s not so obvious you are living in your vehicle, purchasing food by the pound and what items weigh the lest and give the most, where to catch a shower, and even hiding that you are homeless from perspective employers who do indeed discriminate because of the assumption that homeless are homeless because of mental, legal and addiction problems.
