In the 1930’s Karp Lykov and his small family were living in the Soviet region known as Siberia. They were members of the fundamentalist Russian Orthodox sect of the church, which was included in the purge of Christianity attempted by the communist atheist Bolsheviks in power at this time in their country’s history. After his brother was shot down by a Communist patrol, Karp decided it was time for he and his family bug out into the woods. This family of 4 took what they could carry and what they thought they would need and were not seen again for the next 42 years!

During those years the family grew to 6 but failed to thrive and were just barely able to survive. Sadly their number dropped to 5 when Akulina, Karp’s wife died of starvation. In 1978 they were discovered by party of geologists looking for a safe spot to land their helicopter. Learn more about the Lykov family story (including more pictures) at the link directly below

If you are interested in the entire Lykov family’s story there is a book on the market:

Lost in the Taiga: One Russian Family’s Fifty-Year Struggle for Survival and Religious Freedom in the Siberian Wilderness  At this time I was only able to find it in hard back and it’s a bit spendy. However, I think it will be a fascinating read!
