Hidden bookshelf cubby holes are one of the oldest known hidden options for small goods we don’t want in open spaces but near to us for use if need be. Yes, they are one of the first places that would be checked by thieves, (right after your under-garment drawer and under your mattress) and even officials searching for contraband. Not a good hiding spot for items you truly don’t want discovered.

But preppers and some homeowners have items that they want near and simply not on display.  This is an option for them. Then there is the idea that once the more obvious hidden stash is found that the average criminal who is already pressed for time will stop looking assuming they have hit pay dirt. A red herring of sorts.

I have a female friend who had an ex-boyfriend who stalked her, she was gifted a fun little box that is an obvious fake book. Cute and decorative. She kept the box on her bookshelf near her back door with a few dollars and an extra set of keys in it. She wasn’t really trying to hide it but didn’t want her get away stash laying out in the open near her back door. Friends and family, we all knew it was there and were hopeful that if needed it would be a grab and go out her back door. Fortunately, she never had to use it for that purpose. But her home was robbed, and that silly little book box was not touched by the criminals!

Even if all you choose to keep within it is what you can afford to have found, they are kind of fun and perhaps give us more ideas on less well-known spots. See how Chrisma0 made theirs at the featured link below from Instructibles.
